Mark your calendar for the kick-off event to the winter backcountry season. The 24th Annual Avalanche Awareness Night will take place at the JH Center for the Arts on Thursday, November 30 with doors opening at 5:30pm with the program beginning at 6:30. This is your opportunity to sharpen your knowledge and understanding of safe winter backcountry travel, avalanche assessment skills, understanding of the early season snowpack, and be part of the local backcountry community. “Avy Night” is presented by the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center Foundation (BTACF) with support from Skinny Skis, Teton Backcountry Alliance, Steve Romeo Memorial Fund, and Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR).
The evening will feature a panel discussion focused on first-person accounts of avalanche incidents, an in-depth examination of the state of the snowpack, and a keynote presentation by Kevin Grove titled Discovering our Human Factors through Stories, Reflection, and Introspection. Kevin is an Professor of Engineering and Physics at Central Oregon Community College, as well as a passionate snow scientist and Avalanche Educator.
The lobby at the Center for the Arts will become a vendor fair of local ski organizations, avalanche education providers, and avalanche safety companies to help get you up to date on current programs and the best new safety gear of the season. Take some time to stop in and chat with local organizations, find an avalanche course, or learn about this year’s safety equipment from Backcountry Access, Ortovox, and Mammut. Of course stop to chat with the BTAC about how to get the best and most current snowpack information.
And as always Avy Night will host an amazing raffle, featuring prizes from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Exum Mountain Guides, Mammut, Ortovox, Backcountry Access, The Hub Bicycles, Outdoor Research, Atomic, Wilson Backcountry Sports, Teton Mountaineering, Skinny Skis and more! RAFFLE TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW! and you need not be present to win (although attendance is encouraged!). We’ll see you at Avy Night!
