We are working diligently to raise funds and install a new wind and snow weather station in the Northwest Snake River Range known locally as the Palisades.
The BTAC forecasts avalanche hazards for approximately 7,000 square miles and relies heavily on weather telemetry to do so effectively. Our forecast zone named the Greys River zone is used heavily and primarily by snowmobilers.
While there are a number of snow telemetry sites in this zone, there are no sites in the northern Snake River Range or Palisades. A recent study on avalanche deaths in Southeast Idaho highlighted the heavy usage this steep and complex area receives. We are working on funding of a complete weather station to be deployed in this zone. The selected site is remote and will require helicopter access for initial setup. We are requesting funding for all or a portion of the equipment and flight or animal pack train time.
