Yostmark Recreational Level 1

February 14 @ 8:00 am - February 16 @ 5:00 pm

Gain a fundamental understanding of avalanche formation and triggering by examining snowpack, weather, terrain, and human factors. Learn the rescue skills necessary for venturing into avalanche terrain and for a long-life of successful touring. This is the primary avalanche instruction for anyone venturing out into the backcountry.

All Rec Level 1 participants are required to have prior experience using climbing skins to travel uphill, they must be comfortable skiing intermediate (blue square), off-piste terrain. Avalanche equipment (beacon, shovel, probe, and backpack) is required, and is available through Yostmark Mountain Equipment for students who do not have their own. Rec Level 1 students can also rent touring skis or a splitboard, poles, skins, and ski boots from Yöstmark Mountain Equipment.

New to touring, but excited to start your avalanche education? In many instances, we recommend avalanche students begin with the BC 101 before signing up for a Level 1 course.

This class is 3 full days, splitting time between the classroom and the field.
